Elsecar Heritage Centre is a National attraction set in the conservation village of Elsecar, surrounded by beautiful South Yorkshire countryside. The Heritage Centre is within the former ironworks and colliery workshops of Earl Fitzwilliam. The site comprises of sympathetically restored Victorian buildings, and has the following site attractions.

As well as the antique fairs and other regular attractions at Elsecar Heritage Centre you will find a full program of events taking place throughout the year, including themed children's activities and outdoor car shows, craft fairs, etc. For details visit Elsecar Heritage Centre Site.

The Heritage Centre includes an indoor play and party venue for children called Playmania, this is situated in building 17 "The Power House". Please visit Playmania's site or telephone 01226 744344 for more details.

 

Also on site is daycare, nursery and wrap-around care provided by The Railway Children. Situated on the ground floor of Building 13 with access to a secure enclosed garden area. For full details telephone 01226 744440.

 

The Elsecar Steam Railway is on site, running along the Dearne and Dove Canal, to Hemingfield and back.  A journey of about 20 minutes, sit back and enjoy the scenic views.  The service is operated by a 1924 steam locomotive, a Avonside Saddlebank, named 'The Earl Fitzwilliam.  Also 'The Countess of Fitzwilliam, a Ruston Diesel Hydraulic Shunter.  And a Yorkshire Engine Company Diesel, 'The Earl Of Stafford.' The service operates on Sundays, hourly from 12.00 until 4.00pm between March and October.  Special running times for Halloween Event & Santa Train Rides.  Other events include, Footplate Experience, Easter and Story Time Specials. Elsecar houses The Newcomen Beam Engine.  The only Newcomen type engine to remain in its original position since the Industrial age.  A unique monumental restoration is now complete and pre-booked guided group tours are available.  Please contact the Heritage Centre for more details.  01226 740203.

 

Elsecar has a variety of working crafts people.  Workshops include picture framing, printing, encaustic art, also shops including traditional sweets and chocolates, which hold interactive experiences for children, and for the adults there is Maison Du Biere, selling a variety of craft and world beers.  Then relax in Brambles Tea Room which offers lunches and afternoon teas.  They offer home made cakes, and a variety of hot and cold snacks. Or visit The Pantry an independent cafe and delicatessen serving home baking and specialists drinks and ice cream.
